Help

The complete guide to ModVex. Pick a chapter on the left or search for a word.

Getting started

ModVex is a 3D modeller in your browser. You draw faces and pull them into 3D, just like in classic SketchUp.

Your first model in a minute

  • Press R (rectangle), click the ground, then the opposite corner. You can type the size, e.g. 6;4 and Enter.
  • Press P (push/pull), click the rectangle and drag up. Type the height, e.g. 2.8 and Enter.
  • Press R again and draw a smaller rectangle right on a wall. Push it in with P and you have a window.
  • To add a roof, select the house and choose Roof over selection from the right-click menu.

The screen

  • At the top are menus for files, views and settings.
  • On the left is the toolbox. You can hide it, dock it or let it float (Layout menu).
  • On the right are the Object, Library, Scene and Display tabs.
  • At the bottom is help for the current tool, the cursor coordinates and the Value box where you type sizes.

The red, green and blue lines are the axes. Blue points up, green points north.

Navigating the view

Mouse

  • Middle button – orbit around the point under the cursor.
  • Right button or Shift + middle – pan. A short right click opens the menu.
  • Wheel – zoom towards the cursor.
  • Shift+Z – zoom extents, Z – zoom window (drag a box).

Touch

One finger draws, two fingers zoom, pan and rotate.

Views

The View menu offers isometric, top, front, back, left, right and bottom views. The coloured balls of the axis indicator (bottom left) do the same. Parallel turns off perspective. 2D plan locks the top view so it doesn’t rotate while you draw a plan.

Walk

Tool W: W A S D or arrow keys to walk, drag to look around, Shift to go faster. Type the eye height in the Value box. Right-click a floor and choose Stand here to start walking from that spot.

Scenes

Save views in the Scene tab. Clicking a scene flies back to it; Play scenes plays them as a presentation.

Drawing

Tools

  • L Line – click points; clicking the first point closes a face. Lines snap to the axes, including vertical.
  • R Rectangle – two corners. Rounded corners: type e.g. 0.3r.
  • C Circle and N Polygon – centre and radius. Type the number of sides as 32s.
  • A Arc – start, end and height. A half circle snaps by itself.
  • G Wall – click the wall corners on the ground. Double-click ends it, clicking the first point closes it all around. Set thickness and height by typing 0.3;2.8.

Exact sizes

While drawing, just type – the text goes into the Value box – and press Enter:

  • 4;3 – rectangle size, 2.5 – length or distance, 45 – angle.
  • Units: 30cm, 250mm, 2m, 5ft, 5'6".

Snapping

The cursor snaps to endpoints, midpoints, edges, faces, guides and their intersections. A label next to the cursor tells you where you are.

Axis lock and drawing plane

  • → locks the red axis, ← the green one, ↑ the blue one, ↓ releases the lock.
  • With rectangle, circle, polygon and arc, the arrow keys switch the drawing plane, so you can draw vertical walls too.
  • A rectangle drawn on an existing face is cut into it. That’s how windows and doors are made.

Shaping

  • P Push / pull – turns a face into a solid or extends it. Double-click repeats the last push/pull. It also snaps to the height of other points.
  • F Offset – creates a smaller copy of a face’s outline inside it, e.g. a window frame.
  • V Revolve – draw a vertical half-profile, click it and then a point on the axis. Type 180 for a half turn.
  • Roof over selection (right-click) – gable, hip or shed, with pitch and overhang.
  • Custom stairs (Library tab) – number of steps, height, depth and width.
  • Close holes – fills missing faces, e.g. after using the eraser.
  • Reverse face – if a face is inside out.
  • Clean up model – merges duplicate points and removes broken faces, handy after an import.

Advanced modelling

All operations are in the Modelling… window (Library tab or right-click) and in Ctrl+K.

Shape (convex solids: box, cylinder, prism…)

  • Split by a plane, horizontally or vertically, into two parts.
  • Chamfer edges – all, vertical only or horizontal only.
  • Round edges with a radius and number of segments.
  • Intersect two solids – a new object from the shared part.
  • Hollow out a box with a wall thickness, open or closed.
  • Convex hull of the selection and footprint outline on the ground.

Deform

Taper upwards, lean, twist, subdivide faces, roughen (stone, rock), triangulate and merge coplanar faces (useful after STL import).

Copies and position

Mirror and join (symmetric object), 3D array (rows, columns and storeys), lay flat on largest face (for 3D printing) and a barrel roof over the selection.

Faces (right-click a face)

Mirror across face, extrude face as new object, copy face, flatten face and tiles on a face with a tile count.

Follow me (Y)

Draw a cross-section (e.g. a moulding or gutter), click it, then click the path points. Start on the profile; double-click or Enter finishes. You can type a segment length.

New shapes (Library tab)

Custom solid (box, cylinder, sphere, cone, pyramid), terrain with hills, spiral stairs, ramp, pipe, torus and dome.

More modelling tools

  • Slice, grow or shrink by a thickness (convex solids), extrude a face to a point and tapered extrude.
  • Copies along a path, as a helix, of growing size, in staggered rows and between two objects.
  • Drop each object onto the surface (e.g. trees onto terrain), randomise rotation and size, stick the selection to a face, same height, all to the ground, base under selection.
  • Frame from edges, join and clean, explode into faces, smooth shape, soft edges, reverse all faces, replace with bounding box.
  • Colour by height, random colours, scale the whole model and centre the model.
  • New faces: ellipse, star, structural profiles L, U, T, I and tube (for follow me) and 3D text from any letters.

Library

30 new objects: bed, sofa, armchair, wardrobe, chest of drawers, bookcase, tables, bar stool, TV stand, lamps, kitchen appliances, bathroom (bathtub, toilet, washbasin, shower) and garden (shed, carport, sandpit, plants, swing, trampoline, barbecue, parasol, picnic table). Use Search the library to find them.

Architecture and making

  • Walls from a face outline – draw a rectangle or plan and raise walls inside, centred on or outside the outline.
  • Floor and ceiling from a room – a slab exactly inside the walls.
  • Round face corners (e.g. a worktop), cut into planks with gaps, sync same-named objects from a master, straighten the rotation of imported objects.
  • New tools: rotated rectangle and smooth curve (round beds, pools, paths).
  • Generators: railing, ladder, chimney, arched gate, L-shaped stairs and colonnade.

Arrangement and view

Arrange on a circle, arrange in a grid, dimension the gaps, centre on a face and the section box – only what’s around the selection is shown (great for interiors). The Parts to SVG for cutting export lays out boards for laser or CNC.

Generators, calculators and housekeeping

Generators (Library tab → list and Insert…)

Custom house (storeys, roof pitch, windows), apartment block, garage, gazebo, greenhouse, footbridge, raised bed, picket fence, brick wall (with brick count), stepping stones, football goal, wall shelves, kitchen island, dining set, custom tree and stage with steps.

Storeys and shape

Add a storey (copy on top), stretch beyond a cut (e.g. a taller house without distorting windows), remove the top face, offset a face outline, simplify an outline, rotate 90° around the red or green axis and unify the object colour.

Selection and layers

Select the largest, smallest or objects with glass, selection to a new layer, layers by name, show only the selection’s layer, show and unlock everything and find floating objects.

Measuring and calculators

Size overview, point height (right-click), nearest points of two objects, wall area, paint calculator, bricks and blocks needed, stair calculator (steps by the 2h + b rule) and slope calculator (also for accessible ramps).

Views, files and housekeeping

Eye-level view, top view of the selection, view tour, automatic scenes, symmetry axes, image filter (black and white, sepia…), selection colour, export layers as OBJ, point coordinates to CSV, remove tiny objects and remove duplicates.

Building, calculations and file exchange

Everything is in the Modelling… window (Library tab or right-click) and in Ctrl+K. The generators are in the generator list on the Library tab.

Generators

L-shaped house (two wings with gable roofs), flat-roof bungalow with a terrace, sauna with benches, stove and glass door, car park with road markings, gabion wall, well, pond with a stone edge and woodshed with logs.

Placement

  • Move up to neighbour – moves the selection in a chosen direction until it touches the nearest object (or the ground).
  • Fill the gap – creates an exact filler between two selected objects (e.g. a board between two cabinets).
  • Copies into corners – select a leg and a table top; the leg goes into all four corners with an inset from the edge.
  • Place around the perimeter – select a post and a plot; copies go all around at no more than the spacing you set.
  • Swap the positions of two objects and stack on top of each other (the lowest stays, the others are stacked on it).

Building calculations

Results appear in a table you can copy with Copy.

  • Concrete calculator – volume of closed solids, weight, bags of dry mix, mixer truck loads and cost.
  • Tile calculator – for the face you right-click or the horizontal faces of the selection: tiles, boxes, adhesive and grout.
  • Roof covering calculator – sloped faces of the selection, roof tiles, underlay membrane and battens.
  • Plasterboard and cladding calculator – vertical faces, boards, screws and joint compound.
  • Room schedule – areas and perimeters of flat objects (draw rooms as faces and name them), with a total and CSV export.
  • Built-up area and plot coverage – plan projection of objects taller than 30 cm; the plot is the largest flat face in the model or the one you select.
  • Material legend – colours with their areas as an SVG image for drawings.
  • Slope and orientation of a face (right-click a face) – angle, percent and compass direction based on the north setting, with a tip on whether a roof suits solar panels.

Labels and views

Level mark (right-click, e.g. +2.800), face area label, object size label, structural grid A, B, C / 1, 2, 3 with guide lines and camera to coordinates (position and target, e.g. the view from a window at 1.6 m). Delete labels just like dimensions.

Files

  • 3MF export – the 3D printing format (PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, Cura) in millimetres, with colours and each object separate.
  • PLY export with colours (e.g. for MeshLab or Blender).
  • DXF drawing import – with the Import button or by dragging the file into the window. Closed outlines (circles too) become faces you can extrude straight away, lines and arcs become thin strips and layers become layers. Units are read from the drawing, otherwise you choose them. Blocks, texts and dimensions aren’t imported.

Building elements, project checks and files

You’ll find them in the Modelling… window, in Ctrl+K, and the face tools also when you right-click a face. The generators are on the Library tab.

Generators

Tiny house, steel hall with a sectional door, shipping container 20 or 40 ft (also high cube), hot tub, fire pit with benches, bleachers with seat capacity and a balcony with a glass balustrade.

Building elements

  • Solar panels on a face – right-click a roof; the panels are laid out in the roof plane with a margin and you see the count, the output in kWp and the area.
  • Row of windows on a face – on a wall or a sloped roof (roof windows), with width, height and sill height.
  • Parapet around the roof, foundations under the selection (with the concrete volume), insulation around the selection (with the insulation area and volume) and a railing around a terrace or balcony.

Selection and organisation

Select objects inside the selection (e.g. the furniture in a room), name by material, layers by material, number by position (parking spaces, panels, columns), select locked objects and a chain dimension across all selected objects.

Schedules and project checks

  • Excavation calculator – area with working space, volume, bulking and truck loads.

  • Areas by type – floors, ceilings, walls, roofs and glass, also as CSV.
  • Glazing ratio – glass to floor area with a rule-of-thumb rating.
  • Distances to plot boundaries – the smallest distance of each building to the boundary.
  • Volume overview – closed solids with a total and CSV export.

Files

  • Import SVG outlines – rectangles, circles, polygons and curves become faces, lines become thin strips. You can also drag the SVG into the window.
  • Plot from coordinates – enter the plot’s points; local coordinates and S-JTSK (Y X) are supported.
  • Model viewer (HTML) – a single file your client opens in any browser to look around the model without installing anything.

Parts, solid tools and terrain

You’ll find them in the Modelling… window and in Ctrl+K; part machining also when you right-click a face. Parts are in the generator list on the Library tab – sizes are in millimetres. For small parts switch the units to mm.

Solid tools (like SketchUp’s Solid Tools)

Select two or more solids: Union, Subtract (the others are subtracted from the first), Intersect, Trim (the first trims the second and stays), Split (three parts: A without B, B without A and the common part) and Outer shell. They work on any closed solids.

Parts (20)

Hex head bolt, nut, washer and threaded rod (M3 to M24), spur gear and gear rack (module, number of teeth), pulley, ball bearing, shaft with keyway, L-bracket and flange with holes, spring, T-slot aluminium profile, electronics enclosure with lid, standoff, pipe elbow, tee and reducer, knurled knob and hinge.

Part machining

Right-click a face of the part: Hole (through or to a depth), Countersunk hole, Hole pattern, Bolt circle, Slot, Pocket, Boss, Hex nut trap (with 3D printing clearance) and Opening in a wall (door, window). The Bill of materials counts identical parts and downloads a CSV.

Terrain (like Sandbox)

Terrain from contours (select flat outlines at different heights), Terrain from points (X Y Z), Smoove terrain (a hill or pit around the clicked spot), Stamp terrain under a building and Drape onto terrain (a path or bed follows the slope).

More SketchUp tools

Diameter dimension, Orient faces (flips reversed faces outwards), Pie, Loft between outlines (e.g. from a circle to a square), Slice to faces at a given height, Two-point perspective, Paste in place, Colour picker and a Part drawing in three views with basic dimensions (SVG).

Display

Materials have a subtle sheen, shadows are sharper and arc edges are softened like in SketchUp – cylinders and holes aren’t covered in lines. Turn it off with Soften arc edges.

Very complex solid operations (e.g. a cylinder through a cylinder) can leave tiny seams; the part may then be reported as not closed. Join and clean or Model check helps.

More tools

Generators for a dog kennel, bin shelter, planter, fireplace, workbench and custom bed. Plant trees spreads trees over a plot, away from buildings; Gutters and downpipes add them to a roof; Timber stud wall and Joisted ceiling create studs and joists at a spacing. Total length of members adds up trims, beams or pipes, Distances between objects lists the gaps, and Sun hours on a face (right-click) shows how many hours a roof or terrace gets sun. Also Select objects of the same colour, Select the whole layer, Copy as a variant (into a new layer next to the original), Label object names, Label rooms, Export GeoJSON and Scale by a known length.

Selecting and editing

Selecting

Space switches to Select. A click selects an object, Shift adds. Dragging left to right selects objects fully inside the box, right to left also those it touches. Ctrl+A selects all, Ctrl+I inverts the selection.

Sizes right at the object

Above the selected object is a width × depth × height label. Click a number, type a new size and press Enter. The lock next to it keeps the proportions.

Move, rotate, scale

  • M Move – a point from and to. Ctrl toggles copy. Right after, type x5 for a row of 5 copies or /4 to divide the distance.
  • Q Rotate – centre, direction and angle (snaps every 15°). Ctrl and x6 work here too.
  • S Scale – drag or type 2 or 2;1;1.
  • The arrow keys also nudge the selection (PageUp and PageDown for height, Shift ten times further) and [ ] rotate it.

More actions (Object tab or right-click)

Mirror, mirror copy, rotate 90°, drop to the ground or onto the surface below, align and distribute, grid and polar arrays, group (Ctrl+G) and ungroup, duplicate (Ctrl+D), copy and paste (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V), rename with numbering, lock, hide, isolate.

Layers

In the Scene tab create layers such as Furniture or Surroundings and hide them at once. Move objects into a layer in the Object tab.

Measuring and labels

  • T Tape measure – distance between two points. With Ctrl it creates a guide line.
  • U Protractor – measures an angle and creates an angled guide.
  • D Dimension – two points and an offset. The dimension stays in the model.
  • K Text – a label attached to a spot. On a face it suggests its area.
  • J Measure area – click an outline, e.g. a plot, and see m² and perimeter.
  • Dimension selection – width, depth and height dimensions at once.
  • The Object panel shows sizes, surface, volume and, for the clicked face, its area, perimeter and edge lengths.

Erase dimensions, labels and guides with the eraser.

Materials and appearance

Colours

B Paint – click a colour in the Object tab, then a face. Shift paints the whole object, Alt picks up a face’s colour. Glass and water are transparent. Pick a custom colour with the colour box; it is remembered. Replace this colour everywhere recolours the whole model at once.

Troubleshooting

  • The face wasn’t created. The points must lie in one plane. Lock an axis with an arrow key or draw on an existing face.
  • Push/pull doesn’t work. Click right on the face (it turns blue). Locked objects can’t be edited; unlock them in the Scene tab.
  • Something disappeared. Check hidden objects, layers, isolation and the section. Shift+Z shows everything visible.
  • The model is slow. Turn off shadows or smooth shading, or turn on Power-saving mode in the Display tab. Simplify large imports.
  • Sizes don’t match. Check the units in the Display tab. Numbers without a unit use them.
  • I lost my work. Look at Project versions and History in the Scene tab.
  • The app doesn’t start. It needs a browser with WebGL (current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari).
